ALP backbencher in fatal collision

By Anna Whitelaw

A FEDERAL Labor backbencher was involved in a fatal head-on collision with a motorcyclist at Strath Creek north-east of Melbourne yesterday afternoon, one of four deadly smashes on Victorian roads this weekend.

Last night, a Frankston teenager was killed and several others seriously injured after a minibus carrying eight people and a Ford Laser collided at a busy Frankston South intersection.

Federal MP for McEwen Rob Mitchell was driving on Broadford-Flowerdale Road, when his silver Ford sedan and a motorcyclist who lost control of his bike and swerved into oncoming traffic, collided, just after midday.

The motorcyclist - a man in his 50s - died at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Mr Mitchell said the MP was taken to Northern Hospital in Epping with minor injuries, but later discharged.

''Due to the shock of the accident, Mr Mitchell will not attend this sitting of Parliament,'' she said.

Mr Mitchell narrowly won the marginal seat of McEwen at last year's federal election, following the resignation of former Liberal MP Fran Bailey.

In the Frankston accident, a 19-year-old woman was a passenger in the Laser when the car and the minibus collided on Moorooduc Highway about 6pm. She was treated by paramedics at the scene, but later died.

Her driver, a 20-year-old Carrum Downs man, was rushed to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.

One man in the minibus was also taken to The Alfred hospital with arm injuries, while two other men were taken to Dandenong Hospital with injuries to their upper bodies.

On Friday, a four-year-old boy died after he was hit by a car in Kensington.

In Shepparton on Friday, a 34-year-old woman was killed in a hit and run.

The four deaths bring the state's road toll to 59 so far for 2011, down from 64 at this time last year.
