Hanson leads in race for NSW seat

PAULINE Hanson is leading the count for the last New South Wales upper house seat.

The former One Nation leader is ahead by about 0.05 per cent of a quota, followed by the Greens' Jeremy Buckingham and Labor's Andrew Ferguson.

Tomorrow, the Electoral Commission will begin the slow process of data-entering votes where people indicated preferences above the line as well as below-the-line votes.

Analyst Antony Green said this would take about two weeks, with the expectation that the final distribution of preferences would take place on April 12.

On Tuesday, Labor's Luke Foley criticised the Greens over their decision not to swap preferences with Labor, calling them ''rotten and unprincipled'' and saying they could have helped Ms Hanson to win a seat.

But many Labor how-to-vote cards distributed on Saturday did not indicate a second preference for the Greens in the upper house.

''Mr Foley boasted Labor would preference the Greens to retain a progressive upper house,'' said the Greens' David Shoebridge. ''But a majority of Labor's own how-to-vote cards show this was not the case.''

Mr Foley declined to comment yesterday, saying that he was no longer the campaign spokesman.
