A DRINKER has been banned from driving after taking a mobility scooter for a joyride and crashing it through the window of a hairdressers called Gent’s Corner.
James Macky, 52, swiped pensioner John Curley’s slow one-seater after he left it outside Mount Cafe in Feltham before hitting hairdressers Gents Corner.
He made his getaway just after 10.30am on February 17 as well-wishers pursued him down the road.
In a desperate attempt to escape Macky then crashed into the front of the popular hairdressers, stunning snipper John Namazy, 47.
Comical CCTV footage shows one customer waiting outside having to leap out of the way to avoid the speeding scooter.
Macky then gets up as if nothing has happened and starts talking to gobsmacked locals.
They kept him at bay while cops arrived to arrest him and this week he was hauled to Uxbridge Magistrates Court.
Last night surprised former electrician Mr Curley, 81, told The Sun on Sunday: “The first I knew of it was someone telling a bloke had nicked my scooter.
“He had been in the cafe before acting strange, standing on the table.
“No-one has ever nicked it before and we have never had any bother round here in the past.
“I always make sure I bring my keys everywhere with me now.”
Hairdresser Mr Namazy said outside court he had been cutting a customer’s barnet at the time of the crash.
He added: “As we were talking I just saw him go into the window. The impact made him come off the thing.
“I went out to see if he needed help then I noticed someone running after him saying ‘Stop him, he’s nicked the scooter!’.
“He didn’t seem normal and I had to control him until the police arrived about ten minutes later.”
Macky, who lives five minutes from the crime scene, received a suspended prison sentence and has been banned from driving any vehicle for twelve months.
He pleaded guilty to taking and driving away the scooter as well as threatening behaviour at the same time and place.
He was sentenced to eight weeks imprisonment, suspended for eighteen months and will remain under the supervision of the probation service for the entire period.
He must also comply with an alcohol abstinence requirement for forty days, which will be monitored electronically.
Macky was fined £100 and ordered to pay a total of £550 compensation, with £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.
But Mr Namazy said he had not reviewed a penny for the £1,200 of damage to his shop.
He added: “I don’t know why I haven’t had anything - I just want my shop fixed.”
