Former deputy premier Jim Kennan dies

Former Victorian deputy premier and leading lawyer Jim Kennan has died following a battle with cancer.

Mr Kennan, 64, died this afternoon, a spokesman from his legal chambers said.

Deputy premier to Joan Kirner from 1990 to 1992, Mr Kennan also served as attorney-general and held several ministries in the Labor government's term from 1983 until it was defeated at the 1992 election.

He took over as Victorian Labor leader from Ms Kirner shortly after the election loss but left politics in 1993.

He returned to the law in 2001 after working for some years in consultancy and business, and was still working up until the time of his death.

The QC represented Bushfires Reconstruction and Recovery head Christine Nixon at the bushfires royal commission in April.

Mr Kennan first practised at the Victorian Bar in 1971 and entered parliament in 1982.

As well as attorney-general, he was minister of corrections, planning and environment, Aboriginal affairs, transport, major projects and the arts.

After leaving politics, he was chairman of the Australia India Council between 1995 and 1999 and was the coordinator of the Global Foundation's Asia Pacific Round Table in Washington in 2000.

He is survived by his wife Janet and three adult children.
