Age dominates press awards

THE Age and The Sunday Age have dominated the shortlist for this year's Walkley awards, Australia's premier journalism prizes, securing 15 nominations and three commendations.

The Age's Indonesia correspondent, Tom Allard, and photographer Jason South were nominated in the social equity category for their report on mental health care in Indonesia.

Senior journalist Andrew Rule was nominated for best magazine feature for his powerful story in Good Weekend on a thalidomide victim.

Nikki Barrowclough was nominated for best newspaper feature for her story on elusive Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, while Tim Lester and Andrew Meares were nominated in the best interview category.

The Age's Ron Tandberg and The Sunday Age's Matt Golding were nominated for best cartoon. Tandberg was nominated for his lampooning of Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott's reluctance to adopt green policies. Andrew Dyson was commended.

In the online journalism category, Europe correspondent Paola Totaro, Robert Wainwright and Simon Rankin were nominated for a multimedia report.

China correspondent John Garnaut was nominated for outstanding continuous coverage for reports on jailed Rio Tinto executive Stern Hu.

Warwick McFadyen was nominated for best headlines. Richard Baker and Nick McKenzie were commended in the investigative journalism section.

Vince Caligiuri was nominated for best news photography, while South and Simon O'Dwyer were nominated for press photographer of the year.

Senior business columnist Adele Ferguson and senior Sunday Age reporter Michael Bachelard were nominated separately in the best business reporting category.

The Herald Sun and Sunday Herald Sun received three nominations. The awards are announced in December.
